Bio

Dr. Nuran Nabi, a Writer, Freedom Fighter, Scientist and Community Leader,  received Ekushey Padak, the 2nd highest national award of Bangladesh for his outstanding contribution in language and literature.  Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the prestigious award to Dr. Nabi at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on 20th  February, 2020 in a ceremony attended by ministers, parliament members and many high officials.

Earlier in 2017,  Dr. Nabi was awarded Bangla Academy Honorary Fellowship for his outstanding  contribution to liberation war related literature. He also received Washington D. C. Boimela Literary Award for his outstanding contribution to liberation war related literature in 2018. 

A few of his notable books are Bullets of’71: A Freedom Fighter’s Story, Born in Bengal, Amar Ekattor Amar Juddho, Jonmechi A Banglay, Jonmo Jhorer Bangladesh, Bangladeshe Pakistanider Juddhaporadh O President Nixon-Dr.Kissingerer Dai, Amerikay Jahanara Imamer Sesh Dinguli, Char Tarar Alo, Onibarjo Muktijuddho.

 

Dr. Nuran Nabi is a valiant freedom fighter of Bangladesh liberation war of 1971. He was awarded a special citation by the Commander in Chief of Bangladesh Liberation Army for his valor and outstanding contribution to Bangladesh liberation war. Additionally, the Far Eastern Economic Review, May 6th, 1972 issue, referred to Dr. Nabi as ”the Brain” of the Tangail Freedom Fighters Forces. These forces organized themselves within the country and fought against the Pakistani forces in the district of Tangail situated only sixty miles away from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and the headquarters of Pakistani forces.

 

Dr. Nabi  has been speaking in various forums in the USA and Bangladesh to make awareness about the Bangladesh genocide 1971, and demanding the trials of Bangladesh war criminals. 

 

Dr. Nuran Nabi obtained BS Hon’s and MS degrees in Biochemistry from the Dhaka University, Bangladesh and then started his career as a lecturer of Biochemistry at the Dhaka University. He obtained his  Ph. D. degree in Cell Biology from Kyushu University, Japan in 1980 and did postdoctoral research at the New York University Medical Center in New York on Molecular Biology during 1980-84.

 

He joined Colgate Palmolive Company Research Center as a research scientist in 1984 and subsequently promoted to Associate Director of Technology in the oral care research. Dr. Nabi’s research focuses on chemical control of plaque and gingivitis in humans. 

 

Dr. Nabi is a renowned scientist. He has 100 patents and  research publications to his credits.  His break through research resulted in the development of  a revolutionary multi-care dentifrice known as Colgate Total  for which Dr. Nabi received several awards from his company and some other organizations. He has  presented  advanced dentifrice technology to  major dental schools in the USA as an invited speaker. After 22 years of dedicated service, recently Dr. Nabi has retired from Colgate Palmolive Company as an Associate Director of Technology to pursue public office. 

 

Dr. Nabi is very much active in mainstream politics. Currently he is a Councilman of Plainsboro Township, New Jersey, USA since 2007. He was reelected for 3 year-term in last November. He is serving as a Liaison for the Department of Recreation and the Community Services of the Plainsboro Township. Also Dr. Nabi is a Director of the Board of the Plainsboro Free Public Library Foundation, Working Families United for New Jersey, We Are One New Jersey and NRB Commercial Bank. 

 

Dr. Nabi is involved in various investment and socio-cultural activities. He was the President and Editor of the Probashi, a Bengali Weekly newspaper published for many years from New York. He is one of the  founders and past Chairman of the Federation of  Bangladeshi Associations in North America (FOBANA) which has been organizing Annual Bangladesh Conference in various cities in the USA and Canada since last 33 years.

 

Dr. Nabi is the founding Co-Convenor and current President of Bangabandhu Parishad, USA. He  played a leading role in establishing the “Committee for a Democratic Bangladesh” in 1980’s. And later in the 1990’s, he established the “Committee for the Realization of Bangladesh Liberation War Ideals and Trial for Bangladesh War Criminals.”  He spearheaded these two organizations in the USA. Dr. Nabi is the founder of many organizations such as Bangladeshi Americans against Terrorism Inc., USA Committee for Secular and Democratic Bangladesh, Bangladesh Society of NJ, Bangladesh Association of NJ and several other organizations.

 

 Dr. Nabi’s wife Dr. Zeenat Nabi is also a scientist. They live in New Jersey, USA  with their two sons Mushfik and Adnan.
